Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
At the press conference for Las corrientes / The Currents, presented in the Official Selection, director Milagros Mumenthaler, joined by the film’s artistic and production team, discussed the long creative process behind her third feature. Crafted over nine years, blending life’s external stimuli into a character-driven narrative, the film centres on Lina, portrayed by Isabel Aimé González Sola, who is navigating a fragile mental state. Mumenthaler’s meticulous approach includes finalising scripts before filming and working closely with actors to refine their movements and gestures, as well as the character’s psychological depth.
Lina is a successful fashion designer in Switzerland whose life begins to unravel, leading her to Argentina where her past weighs heavily on her. Through a dreamy, romantic lens and a haunting orchestral score, Mumenthaler delves into her inner world, desires and fears. While not a thriller, the film captures tension reminiscent of Hitchcock, with a focus on Lina’s enigmatic, silent struggle. The film’s production, achieved despite the challenging context for Argentine cinema, highlights a collective commitment to personal, risk-taking storytelling.
