Actress, producer, and activist Jennifer Lawrence received the Donostia Award yesterday at the ceremony held at the Kursaal. Tthe Festival’s Jury president presented the Award, praising Lawrence's exceptional versatility, quoting Donald Sutherland, who remarked, “She could change her name to Jennifer Lawrence-Olivier,” highlighting her magnificent ability to blend the magnetic charisma of icons like Lauren Bacall and Gena Rowlands.
In her moving acceptance speech, Lawrence expressed her gratitude and reflected on the power of storytelling to bridge cultures. She acknowledged the challenges of independent filmmaking, citing her latest project Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay, as a deeply personal experience. She also acknowledged the impact of previous winners like Meryl Streep, Pedro Almodóvar or Lauren Bacall, whose bold contributions have shaped cinema. “I am truly honoured,” she said.
Lawrence’s career includes her Oscar-winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook and acclaimed roles in American Hustle, Don’t Look Up, Joy and The Hunger Games series. As a producer, through her company Excellent Cadaver, she champions innovative projects like Causeway and Die My Love. The ceremony was followed by a screening of Die My Love, solidifying her status as one of the most influential contemporary artists in cinema.
