Esther García and Alberto Iglesias will meet in San Sebastian on June 17 to discuss their long and prolific participation as producer and composer, respectively, in a long list of projects directed by Pedro Almodóvar with his El Deseo production company. This meeting will close the Filmmakers' Dialogues season having previously, this Thursday, hosted a rendezvous between the filmmaker Pedro Martín-Calero and the art director José Tirado, as well as the meeting on May 29 between Marta Nieto and Antón Álvarez (C. Tangana), both of whom have recently made their directorial debuts.
Filmmakers' Dialogues is a season offered by the Koldo Mitxelena Kulturenea (KMK) provincial cultural venture together with the San Sebastian Festival's Z365 Festival all year round initiative and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE). The proposal is based on the philosophy of shifting the sole centre of attention from the filmmaker to highlight the other trades involved in developing a project, therefore addressing the meeting as a discussion for two people: a filmmaker and a collaborator. Thus, since January of this year, Filmmakers' Dialogues has hosted conversations between Maria Elorza and Marian Fernández; Helena Taberna and Isaac Rosa; Paula Ortiz and Javier García Arredondo; Celia Rico and María Vázquez, and Javier Giner and Oriol Pla.
The next meeting, taking place this Thursday May 15, will bring a get-together between the director Pedro Martín-Calero and the art director José Tirado who will discuss their collaboration on El llanto / The Wailing, winning debut last year of the Silver Shell ex aequo for Best Director. For his part, Tirado boasts extensive experience in films such as As bestas / The Beasts (Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Perlak, 2022), winner of the City of Donostia / San Sebastian Audience Award for Best European Film, and Teresa (Paula Ortiz, 2023).
At the meeting entitled New Filmmakers and Other Disciplines, on May 29, actor Marta Nieto, who made her debut behind the camera at the Seminci with La mitad de Ana (2024), will talk to Antón Álvarez (C. Tangana), the musician who, with his first work as a director, La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés, bagged a special mention from the Kutxabank-New Directors Jury.
The eighth and last meeting of the season will feature Esther García and Alberto Iglesias, who have come together on around a dozen films directed by Pedro Almodóvar, including Todo sobre mi madre / All About My Mother (1999), Hable con ella / Talk to Her (2002), Dolor y gloria / Pain and Glory (2019) and La habitación de al lado / The Room Next Door. The music for this latter movie, a special screening accompanying the gala for last year's Donostia Award going to Almodóvar, earned Iglesias his twelfth Goya. Esther García, winner of the National Cinematography Award in 2018, has produced almost a hundred films, having participated since Matador (1986) in all of Almodóvar's projects.
Registration to attend these last two talks in the season is now closed, but last-minute tickets, if any, would be subject to availability on a first-come, first-served basis. The remaining discussions will take place in the KMK, at the function room in its Santa Teresa convent venue, found in San Sebastian's Old Town, at 19:00. Although these talks will not be broadcast in streaming mode, their recordings will be available at the end of the season on the Koldo Mitxelena and San Sebastian Festival websites.
