Los domingos / Sundays, the new feature film by Basque filmmaker Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, joins the three other Spanish-produced titles in competition already announced in the Official Selection of the 73rd edition: Maspalomas, by Jose Mari Goenaga and Aitor Arregi; Historias del buen valle / Good Valley Stories, by José Luis Guerin; and Los Tigres, by Alberto Rodríguez.
Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Barakaldo, 1978) will compete for the Golden Shell for the first time with Los domingos / Sundays, the story of a brilliant and idealistic young woman who feels an unexpected attraction to the contemplative life of the cloistered monastery. Newcomer Blanca Soroa and Patricia López Arnaiz, who won the Silver Shell for Best Leading Performance for Los destellos (Glimmers; Pilar Palomero, 2024), head up the cast of the film, which also stars Miguel Garcés, Juan Minujín, Mabel Rivera, and Nagore Aranburu.
Ruiz de Azúa debuted with Cinco lobitos / Lullaby (Zinemira, 2022), which premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale and won eight awards at the Málaga Film Festival, including the Golden Biznaga for Best Film and the Goya for Best New Director. She is also the author of the miniseries Querer (2024) which was part of the San Sebastian Festival’s Official Selection out of competition and later won the Forqué Award, the Feroz Award, and the International Competition Grand Prize at the Séries Mania festival.
Los domingos / Sundays tells the story of Ainara, an idealistic and brilliant 17-year-old who has to decide what university degree to pursue — or at least that's what her family hopes she will do. However, the young woman says she feels increasingly closer to God and is considering embracing the life of a cloistered nun. The news takes the entire family by surprise, creating a chasm and a real test for everyone.
