Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Donostia stood up to do justice to more than fifty years of impeccable track record with the Donostia Award to Esther García and her powerful legacy. Described as a “pioneer” by the Festival, García has been key to the role of women in production, with Itziar Ituño acknowledging that today, most production directors in Spain owe their careers to her. The award, presented by Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar, acknowledged her incredible journey, shaping the unique cinematic universe of El Deseo since 1986. García, expressing deep gratitude, praised her mentors and role models—Pilar Miró, Josefina Molina, and others—highlighting the challenges she faced as a young woman in a male-dominated industry. “There were very few of us, but we fought and sought our place. Not one step back, comrades”, she claimed, urging unity in the fight for rights. Highlighting the power of cinema to encourage change, García passionately called for an end to injustice, referencing the crises in Ukraine and Gaza. With a career spanning nearly 100 films, García’s impact on Spanish and Latin American cinema remains immeasurable, continuing to inspire filmmakers and audiences worldwide.
