Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The first producer to win the Donostia Award ever, García’s career speaks for itself. Her magnificent merits and talent, generosity, simplicity and good nature were compelling reasons to celebrate her according to Joxean Fernández, the director of the Basque Film Library. García is not used to being the centre of attention. “I have been here with very important people, and the room was packed. Now there isn’t as much interest”, she joked.
Beyond her precious defence of her beloved profession, she kept on repeating the word “pride” in a maternal way when looking back on her 50-year career, 39 of which have been with Almodóvar’s El Deseo production company. She is proud of others, as she has helped many filmmakers flourish on the Spanish or world scene, as is the case of Oliver Laxe.
García and Laxe at the Oscars?
Laxe’s Sirāt is now the official Spanish candidate for the Oscars. García firmly believes it can be nominated. “More and more foreigners belong to the Academy”, and the criteria are now younger and fresher. Neon, responsible for the campaigns that won awards for Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall and Anora, has bought the distribution rights. García asks young producers for empathy, enormous negotiating skills, “and desire, strength, and passion: pretty much what I’ve asked of myself”.
