José Antonio Bayona reflects on his long-awaited position as president of the Official Selection jury at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival. Scheduling conflicts prevented his participation until now.
He feels his experience at Cannes will be helpful. As an admirer of Greta Gerwig’s leadership style, he plans to apply similar standards of harmony and constructive dialogue. He is excited to watch films and discuss cinema but acknowledges the responsibility of his role, knowing how awards can impact both films and f ilmmakers. He shares fond memories of his previous visits to the Festival and the challenges of presenting a film, a process he finds overwhelming but rewarding. “As Spielberg said, suffering on film sets is inevitable”, he points out. He has lately been active as a producer on two upcoming films, El fantasma en la batalla and Vieja loca.
