Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
In Deux pianos / Two Pianos, veteran French director Arnaud Desplechin weaves a haunting melodrama of passion, silence, and self-discovery. Inspired by the classics of Bergman or Truffaut, the film follows Mathias (François Civil), a piano virtuoso tormented by unspoken desires, and Elena (Charlotte Rampling), his former teacher, who may represent an unwanted future. The film explores romantic triangles, the return of an estranged figure, and the revelation of a long-lost son, all framed within the extremes of artistic and emotional suffering.
Music, as the central passion of Mathias, both soothes and exposes the characters' deepest wounds. In typical Desplechin fashion, little is revealed about the characters' pasts, leaving actors to discover their roles organically. This “ghost melodrama” delves into the complex choices we make or not in the face of love and art, poignantly reflecting on the act of escape and the silent decisions that shape our lives.
