Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Asier Altuna’s Karmele brings to the screen the extraordinary true story of Karmele Urresti and Txomin Letamendi, whose lives were marked by exile, love, and political commitment during the Civil War and Franco’s regime, based on Kirmen Uribe’s novel “Elkarrekin esnatzeko ordua”, where a fisherman whose daughter is called Karmele set his boat on fire after it was confiscated by Franco’s authorities. “When I read the book, I was impressed and realised I wanted to tell the story through the characters.” Uribe is happy with the adaptation, saying that Altuna’s take on it is very beautiful. “Though it’s a local story, it resonates universally,”, Altuna says. The stellar performances by Jone Laspiurre and Eneko Sargadoy celebrate culture and the often-overlooked role of women in history.
