Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Kleber Mendonça Filho, author of films such as Aquarius and Bacurau and one of the most fascinating Brazilian directors today, presents his latest film O Agente Secreto / The Secret Agent (which won him the award for best director at the last Cannes Film Festival), an immersion into the historical memory of a country beyond all conventions.
Exploring Brazil’s 1970s military dictatorship with a personal and nuanced approach, the director says he was inspired by the resurgence of political discourses minimising that dark period, feeling compelled to reconstruct it. “Brazil is living in a kind of self-inflicted amnesia,” he states. While the film is deeply political, he highlights it’s not a militant film, aiming to avoid clichés. Drawing from his own childhood memories of 1977, when he was nine, he blends historical reflection with personal sentiment. Visually, the film incorporates diverse genres, textures, and inspirations from Sergio Leone or de Palma, naturally evoking the look and feel of the 70s while avoiding digital standardisation.
