Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Directors Kentaro Hirase and Yutaro Seki are back to San Sebastian in the Official Selection with their new film, SAI / SAI: Disaster, featuring celebrated Japanese actors Kagawa Teruyuki and Anne Nakamura.
At today’s press conference, they discussed their innovative approach to terror, emphasising everyday fears rather than explicit horror. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s natural disasters, the film explores an intangible fear, portraying a more indirect kind of terror. Unlike traditional horror films, they intentionally avoided making the antagonist a serial killer, rather focusing on creating a natural disaster-like presence.
Based on a six-episode TV series, the film takes elements from the original to create a distinct narrative, challenging conventional storytelling by following a non-linear structure. Nakamura, who reprised her role from the TV series, expressed her excitement about working with the team. The directors praised Teruyuki’s powerful performance and expect Japan’s evolving cinematic future to resonate internationally
