Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
In La suerte / Fate, the new series by Paco Plaza and Pablo Guerrero produced by Boomerang and Disney+, a shy taxi driver unexpectedly becomes the chauffeur of a retired bullfighter, El Maestro, who is trying to regain his lost prestige. Ricardo Gómez and Óscar Jaenada shine as the leads, plunging into the complex world of bullfighting, an arena that defies the moral standards of contemporary society.
This exploration of coincidence, tolerance, and prejudice is both narrative and visually ambitious, blending an old-world art with modern storytelling. Plaza highlights the importance of breaking down biases, emphasising that they prevent us from empathising with others.
The series is filmed in 16mm, a deliberate choice to capture the timelessness and beauty of bullfighting, a practice fading into history. Merging experimental techniques and a fresh format, La suerte / Fate is a bold statement on both art and identity. Available on Disney+ starting 8 October, this highly anticipated series is part of the Official Selection at the Festival’s special screenings.
