The award will be presented at the San Sebastián Festival’s opening gala
One Battle After Another (2025), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has landed the FIPRESCI Grand Prix on being voted best film of 2026 by the members of FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics. This, the oldest association of professional film critics and journalists, celebrated its centenary in 2025. A total of 591 critics from 69 countries participated in the vote, choosing this North American production from among all those released since 1 July 2025.
This will be the fourth time that a film by Paul Thomas Anderson will have bagged this recognition, after Magnolia (1999), There Will Be Blood (2007), which the director collected on the Kursaal stage in 2008, and Phantom Thread (2018).
The prize will be presented during the opening gala of the San Sebastián Festival’s 74th edition on 18 September. The winning film will screen on the same day, at a time to be announced on 7 September.
One Battle After Another was the big winner at the last edition of the Academy Awards, scooping six statuettes: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Casting, Adapted Screenplay and Editing.
The other four finalists were Stille Freundin / Silent Friend, by Ildikó Enyedi, FIPRESCI Prize in Venice; The Voice of Hind Rajab, by Kahouter Ben Hania, Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize in Venice and City of Donostia / San Sebastián Audience Award; Hamnet, by Chloé Zhao, Audience Awards at the Toronto and Valladolid festivals; and Fjord by Cristian Mungiu, Palme d’Or, Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize at the last Festival de Cannes and which will participate in Perlak.
Since its creation in 1999, the FIPRESCI Grand Prix has gone to films by acclaimed filmmakers such as Maren Ade, Pedro Almodóvar, Paul Thomas Anderson, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Alfonso Cuarón, Jean-Luc Godard, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Michael Haneke, Aki Kaurismäki, Abdellatif Kekiche, Kim Ki-duk, Yorgos Lanthimos, Richard Linklater, Terrence Malick, George Miller, Cristian Mungiu, Jafar Panahi, Roman Polanski, Chloé Zhao and Walter Salles.
