This directorial debut by the Columbian Juan Andrés Arango competed in the Un Certain Regard section at the latest Festival de Cannes after having participated in Films in Progress at San Sebastian last year. Tomas is a black youth trying to make his way in Bogota. Looking for his young brother Jairo, he sets out on a journey that will test his ability to deal with the fear and wounds of the past.  

BIOGRAPHY

Bogota, 1976. Studied Film and Television at the National University of Colombia and specialised in cinematographic photography at the ESCAC in Barcelona. From 2001 to 2002 he was assistant director on the Colombian TV series Historias de hombres solo para mujeres. La playa, his feature debut, was selected for Films in Progress at San Sebastian 2011 and later participated in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, landed the Lions Film Award at the Rotterdam Festival and the post-production awards granted by the French Government's Fond Sud Cinéma, the Hubert Bals Fund at the Rotterdam Festival and Work in Progress at the Valdivia Festival (Chile).
