«A desperate search for lost innocence»
Monday, September 22nd, 2014

Actress Noomi Rapace and director Michaël Roskam gave a press conference in the Kursaal yesterday to answer questions about The Drop which had been screened earlier in the Official Section. A crime drama adapted by scriptwriter Denis Lehane from his own short story by shifting the setting from Boston to Brooklyn, The Drop follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters - "money drops" in the underworld of Brooklyn bars, and features the final appearance on film by James Gandolfini. Both actress and director stressed how inspiring it had been to work with the Sopranos star. Rapace described him as “an icon, so rounded yet so humble,” while Roskam recalled that, “he walked in as if it was his first role; he was humble but capable of being really vulnerable. It was a great honour to work with him, and a nice way to say goodbye,” Roskan revealed. He also said that the film was basically “a desperate search for lost innocence” and that they had aimed to take a new approach to crime films while being faithful to tradition, by placing the emphasis on the characterdriven elements in the story. Noomi Rapace, who came to San Sebastián back in 2007 with Daisy Diamond, acknowledged that she had been fortunate and blessed since then to have worked with some of the best people in the world. She also confessed that she’d love to work in Spain sometime (her father was Spanish) and that she felt really connected to Spanish cinema. A.O.
