Taki and Mitsuha, one day find that their sleep brings their body swap and the two start communicating by memo. As they awkwardly overcome one challenge after another, a bond develops between the two- one that evolves into something more romantic.
Makoto Shinkai's theatrical release debut as a director came with Voices of a Distant Star in 2002 on which he did nearly everything himself, sending shock waves through the anime world for its expression of an impressive world view. He then increased his staff to bring out the masterpieces The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004) and 5 Centimeters per Second (2007) before finally scoring a smash hit with The Garden of Words (2013).
