RTVE, official sponsor of the San Sebastián Festival, will host four galas at the event to showcase the coming out of some of the films in which it has a stake. Holding pride of place are the directorial debut from José Mota and the most recent projects from Jose Corbacho, Manuel Menchón and David Pérez Sañudo, ranging from comedy to historical thriller and passing through the documentary genre. The 74th edition of the San Sebastián Festival will run from 18-26 September.
‘Arriba Tutto’, by José Mota
José Mota’s leap into the directing of feature films brings an emotional comedy on the transformative power of laughter and love, starring José Mota himself alongside the young Pablo Cabello, Karra Elejalde, Olivia Molina, Diego Anido, Mila Borrás, Luciano Scarpa and Eugenio Barona. The film is scheduled for release in cinemas on 9 October.
The story travels to the early 20th century with a soldier on a mission to recover the boy he once was and the legacy of his father, a travelling comedian who taught him to see the world with humour. On the way he will discover that laughter may just be the best way to cope with adversity.
‘Burundanga’, by Jose Corbacho
The big screen adaptation of the hit play of the same name, directed by Jose Corbacho, is both a romantic comedy and a tale of losers: characters who get it all wrong, but whom you love from the first minute. As the script twists and turns, each situation beats the last, coming at a furious pace packed with humour and laughter. At the end of the day, all of the genre’s classic ingredients surround the tale of a couple as they struggle against all odds to ensure that love will win the day.
Featuring on the cast are Adriana Torrebejano, Marcel Borràs, Carol Rovira, Francesc Ferrer, Jordi Sánchez, Sílvia Abril and Santi Millán.
‘La voz quebrada’, by Manuel Menchón
La voz quebrada / Lorca: Broken Voices is a documentary film from Manuel Menchón based on the memories, personal belongings and souvenirs furtively secreted away by Juan Ramírez de Lucas, identified as the true last lover of Federico García Lorca. 90 years after that love story torn apart by the start of the civil war and Lorca’s murder, the intimate side of the poet and playwright is shown in an emotional journey to the heart of a story that has been silenced since then. The film will show in cinemas from 16 October.
To return their voice to those who lived during those months, the cast is headed by Álvaro Morte as Federico García Lorca, alongside Francesco Carril, Joaquín Notario, Pedro Casablanc, Verónica Sánchez, Víctor Clavijo, María Galiana and Alberto San Juan.
‘Sacamantecas’, by David Pérez Sañudo
Sacamantecas / The Haverster, the third feature film from David Pérez Sañudo, will be presented at a joint RTVE and EITB gala. This is an attractive thriller inspired in true events and set at the end of the Third Carlist War, when several women are strangled in Vitoria and a sister of one of the victims sets out to achieve justice.
Starring Patricia López Arnaiz and Antonio de la Torre, the film will show in the Special Screenings section of the Festival’s Official Selection.
Greater presence at the San Sebastián competition
As well as the four films showing in the RTVE Galas, another five titles boasting the Corporation’s support will be present at the San Sebastián Festival 2026.
In the competitive Official Selection, Sants / Saints, by Mikel Gurrea, will compete for the Golden Shell; also featuring in the Official Selection’s Special Screenings will be Ruega por nosotras / Pray for Us by Daniel Monzón and Azken Agurra / The Last Goodbye, by Koldo Almandoz; the first feature film from Javier Giner Esta soledad / This Solitude, will participate in New Directors, and Lejos de los árboles / Far From the Trees, by Meritxel Collel, will show in Zabaltegi-Tabakalera.
RTVE GALAS
1905. A travelling comedian has taught his young son, Michi, to find magic and humour in every corner of life. Years later, in times of war, Michi has become a bitter man, consumed by grudge. An unexpected incident and an encounter with Conchita, his childhood sweetheart, will help him to recover the fascinating view of the world instilled in him by his father.
Berta finds out she's pregnant and doesn't now what to do, as she's unsure of her partner's love for her. Advised by her friend Silvia, she decides to give him burundanga, the so-called truth drug. But when it starts to take effect, Manel confesses to something much more unexpected: that he's a member of an ETA commando.
The murder of poet Federico García Lorca in 1936 turned him into a global myth. For 90 years a name, a forbidden relationship and a plan of escape to Mexico have been kept under wraps. This film is the tragedy of a last love cut short by fascism, between Lorca and a young man called Juan Ramírez de Lucas. Constructed with unseen documents: letters, poems and souvenirs. Juan left a message saying that, after his death, everything should be known.
RTVE-EITB GALA / OFFICIAL SELECTION - Special Screenings
Álava, 19th century. Towards the end of the Third Carlist War, several women are found strangled to death on the outskirts of Vitoria. Ángela Berrosteguieta, sister of one of the victims, arrives seeking justice, determined to prove that Juan Díaz de Garayo, an illiterate farmer, is responsible for the crimes. Meanwhile, Pío Pinedo, head of the constabulary, must contend with the lack of resources in times of war and pressure from the authorities, who prefer to keep the rising wave of murders under wrap.
