This film ponders the destiny of mankind. It considers our relationship with technology from its earliest beginnings to a future where prolonged space travel is possible. Postulating that science will lead to either salvation or destruction, much of the film is set on a space ship hutling through space. One of the principal characterts is Hal 9000, a super-computer with human emotions, but alas an all too methodical mind. It goes awry on the crew that it supports when it encounters conflicting programs: it must keep the true nature of the mission hidden from them, but it must also always tell them the truth.
