Tuesday, September 26th, 2017

A gravedigger living with his family in a cemetery proved to be a great subject for Filipino director Daniel Palacio’s first film, coming, as he does, from a developing country with a lot of social problems. He stressed that the situation he portrays in his film is real – people really do live in cemeteries in the Philipines, and he felt that it would find an audience in other countries as there are outcasts everywhere. Selftaught and a protégé of the prestigious director, Brillante Mendoza, who produced Pailalim/Underground, Palacio revealed that it was the inner strength shown by the people who have to live in these appalling conditions that forms the driving force behind his film.
