Vienna, 1777. The blind 18-year-old 'Wunderkind' pianist Maria Theresia Paradis lost her eyesight overnight when she was three years old. After countless failed medical experiments, her parents take her to the estate of controversial 'miracle doctor' Franz Anton Mesmer, where she joins a group of outlandish patients. She enjoys the liberal household in a Rococo world and tastes freedom for the first time, but begins to notice that as Mesmer's treatment brings back her eyesight, she is losing her cherished musical virtuosity...

BIOGRAPHY

After directing numerous short films, Barbara Albert made her debut in the full-length format with Nordrand (1999), a competitor at the Venice Festival. Her next work, Böse Zellen (Free Radicals, 2003) was presented in Locarno. With Fallen (Falling, 2006) she returned to the Venice Festival and with Die Lebenden (The Dead and the Living) she competed at the San Sebastian Festival in 2012. As a screenwriter, she has worked with Andrea Staka, Ruth Mader and Michael Glawogger. And as a producer she is behind titles including Grbavica (Esma's Secret, 2006), by Jasmila Zbanic, and Darwin’s Nightmare (2004), by Hubert Sauper.
