The timeless beauty of dance
Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

Dantza, the third feature film by the Basque dancer, director and scriptwriter, Telmo Esnal, is taking part, out of competition, in the Official Selection this year. It uses dance to tell a story about the cycle of life and the struggle for survival, where the passage of time is marked by the course of nature. Esnal defines Dantza as a simple story that is utterly timeless and that could be set anywhere. “We have made use of the various symbologies that are concealed behind traditional dances to tell a universal story. Our aim has always been to make a beautiful film; the audience will say whether we have managed to do this.

”The process of creating the film meant having to choose which dances they wanted to use. “Very few dances appear in the film; in the traditional dance repertoire there are many more, so we had to choose and establish which ones we needed so that people could understand our story. In this respect, it was a great advantage that I’m a dancer.

”Music plays a central role in the film, and each dance has its own music. “After all, it is a musical,” Esnal points out.
