The year 1931. In Lois, a small Spanish town in the mountains of León, Julián López packs his belongings into an enormous trunk and, without telling his wife Candelas, sets out for Mexico. The year 1970. Candelas has been dead for three years. Suddenly a letter arrives in Lois from Mexico, announcing Julián’s death. In a corner of the family home in Riaño they find a trunk similar to the one Julián had taken to Mexico.
Juanmi Gutiérrez Márquez started his film career making short films in Super 8 and audiovisuals for teaching the Basque language to adults. He was formerly President of the Film Section of Eusko Ikaskuntza (the Society of Basque Studies) and has published several works on Basque cinema. He currently makes documentaries, most of which have been presented at this festival: Tabula rasa (2004), Bozes lexanas (2005), Isiltasun kalea (2006), Motema na ngai (2008), Zuzendu, mesedez! (2008), La plaza de la música (2010), Mur-mur (2012), Ateak zabalduz (2014), Urak dakarrena (2015) and Oihalak adarretan (2016).
